What Factors Are Reviewed After a Rear-End Traffic Collision?

Rear-end collisions can occur for several reasons, including following too closely, driver distraction, misjudged stopping distances, or sudden changes in traffic movement. When one vehicle is turning, investigators may also review timing, speed, and the position of each vehicle before contact occurred.

Vehicle damage patterns usually provide useful information about how the collision unfolded. Road conditions, visibility, weather, and witness accounts may also help establish a timeline. In cases involving serious injuries or fatalities, medical records can help explain the extent of harm caused by the forces involved. Modern vehicles may also contain electronic data that records speed, braking, and other actions before a collision. Reviewing these details can help create a clearer understanding of the sequence of events leading up to the crash.
