Cambridge, MD (June 18, 2026) – A serious crash involving a passenger vehicle and a tractor-trailer left one person badly hurt in Cambridge.
Just after midnight on Wednesday, June 17, emergency units were dispatched to the intersection of Route 50 and Maryland Avenue following reports of entrapment and a vehicle fire. Upon arrival, crews found a passenger car lodged beneath the rear of a semi-truck. Although an initial report indicated a fire, none was found when personnel reached the roadway.
Due to the extensive damage and heavy entrapment, specialized equipment and a heavy wrecker were brought in to assist with the rescue effort. A local towing company provided a rotator that helped free the person trapped inside the vehicle.
The injured person was airlifted to a regional trauma center for treatment. No information about their identity or current medical status was released.
The cause of the collision remains under review as investigators continue gathering details.
We hope the person hurt in this crash makes a full and speedy recovery.
Why Are Underride Crashes Involving Semi-Trucks Usually So Severe?
Underride crashes occur when a smaller passenger vehicle slides beneath the rear or side of a large truck. These types of collisions are commonly associated with severe injuries because the upper portion of the smaller vehicle can be crushed during the contact.
Several factors can contribute to underride crashes, including reduced visibility, low-light conditions, sudden traffic changes, and differences in vehicle size and stopping distance. Modern trailers are equipped with underride guards designed to reduce the risk, but the effectiveness of those systems can vary depending on the circumstances.
Following a major truck-related crash, investigators usually examine vehicle positions, roadway conditions, visibility, speed, and mechanical factors. Information gathered during this process can help determine how the collision occurred and whether additional safety measures may be needed.
