Why Patrol Vehicle Crashes Can Become Severe on Highways
Patrol vehicles may face added danger during traffic stops because they often operate near moving highway traffic. Even when emergency lights are used, drivers nearby may need time and space to react safely.
Large trucks can make these roadway emergencies more serious because of their weight, length, and stopping distance. A semi-truck entering or crossing a highway can create a major accident if another vehicle is already moving through that path.
Highway speed can also reduce reaction time. Drivers may have only seconds to brake or steer away from danger. After severe patrol vehicle collisions, safety reviews often look at vehicle paths, traffic flow, lighting, truck movement, and where the roadway contact happened.
