Why Two-Vehicle Highway Crashes Can Lead to Serious Injuries
Two-vehicle roadway collisions on rural highways can become especially dangerous because vehicles usually travel at higher speeds and may have limited space to avoid sudden hazards. Serious injuries are more likely when crashes involve direct front or side impacts.
Road closures are common after major highway collisions so crews can safely assist injured people, document the roadway, and remove damaged vehicles. Investigators frequently review lane positioning, visibility, traffic conditions, and driver actions after these crashes occur. Rural routes may also present added challenges because curves, changing weather, and longer emergency travel distances can affect how quickly help arrives at the scene.
