Why Multi-Car Roadway Crashes Usually Require Extended Closures
Roadway collisions involving several vehicles can create major traffic disruptions because damaged cars may block multiple lanes and require extensive cleanup. Emergency crews may also need extra time to safely remove occupants from heavily damaged vehicles.
Investigators frequently review traffic flow, vehicle spacing, visibility, and driver reactions after multi-car crashes occur. Rural highways and state routes may face longer closures because alternate travel paths are limited and tow equipment must safely remove several vehicles from the roadway. Secondary crashes can also become a concern when approaching drivers encounter stopped traffic near a blocked section of highway.
