Why Head-On Collisions Often Result in Severe Outcomes
Head-on crashes are among the most dangerous types of roadway collisions because both vehicles are often traveling toward each other at speed. The combined force of impact can significantly increase the risk of serious injury or death.
These crashes can occur when a driver unintentionally crosses into oncoming traffic due to distraction, medical issues, or loss of control. On rural highways, limited separation between lanes can also increase exposure to opposite-direction traffic.
After such incidents, investigators typically examine lane position, roadway design, and vehicle data. These details help reconstruct how a vehicle entered the opposing lane and what factors contributed to the collision.
