What Is Investigated After a Fatal House Fire?
Following a fatal residential fire, investigators work to determine where the fire started and how it spread through the home. They examine burn patterns, structural damage, electrical systems, heating equipment, and other potential ignition sources to establish the sequence of the fire.
Investigators may also review witness statements, photographs, and any available security camera footage. If smoke alarms or fire suppression devices were present, they are examined to determine whether they functioned as intended during the emergency.
The extent of damage can make these examinations time-consuming, especially when large portions of a home have been affected. Information gathered during the review helps establish the cause of the fire and may also contribute to future fire prevention efforts and safety recommendations.
