San Diego, CA (July 16, 2026) – One person lost their life in a multi-vehicle collision on the southbound I-5 near W Washington Street early on Wednesday morning. The crash was first reported shortly after 1:14 a.m.
Initial reports indicated at least two vehicles were involved, though later updates described the collision as involving multiple vehicles. One person was ejected from a vehicle, and emergency units requested a full closure of all southbound lanes while medical assistance was provided.
Traffic was heavily affected as the roadway remained closed for several hours. Later updates allowed some lanes to reopen while others remained closed. The identity of the person who died has not been released, and no additional information about other people involved was immediately available.
