Hampton, VA (July 3, 2026) – A Newport News man lost his life, and three other people were hurt in a multi-vehicle wreck on Wednesday night on Interstate 64 in Hampton.
According to the Virginia State Police, the collision happened at about 9:45 p.m. in the eastbound lanes near Hampton Roads Center Parkway. A preliminary investigation found that a 2013 Ford Escape driven by a 50-year-old woman changed lanes in front of two motorcycles. One of the motorcycles struck the rear of the SUV, and the motorcycle later caught fire.
The motorcyclist, identified as 30-year-old Andrew Sturdy of Newport News, died from his injuries. The Ford Escape driver, the 23-year-old rider of a 2008 Suzuki motorcycle, and the 21-year-old driver of a 2013 Ford Explorer were all taken to hospitals with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The circumstances leading to the crash continue to be examined as investigators work to determine all contributing factors. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Andrew Sturdy’s family and loved ones.
Why Multi-Vehicle Highway Wrecks Can Become More Complex
Multi-vehicle highway wrecks often unfold in a matter of seconds, especially when one collision triggers additional vehicles to become involved. Heavy traffic, limited reaction time, and high travel speeds can make it difficult for nearby drivers to avoid secondary impacts.
Investigators typically review vehicle positions, lane changes, skid marks, debris patterns, and available video footage to establish the sequence of events. They may also examine roadway conditions, visibility, and vehicle damage to determine how each vehicle became involved. This process helps create a detailed timeline and provides a clearer picture of the factors that contributed to the chain-reaction collision.
