What Factors Are Commonly Examined After a Fatal Highway Collision?
When a fatal highway collision occurs, investigators often review a wide range of details to determine how the sequence of events unfolded. Early information may include the number of vehicles involved, roadway conditions, weather, and the time of day.
Vehicle positions, tire marks, debris patterns, and damage can provide insight into driver actions before contact occurred. Investigators may also review traffic camera footage, electronic vehicle data, and witness accounts when available. In some cases, visibility, speed, lane changes, or mechanical issues are included in the review process.
On major interstate routes, temporary lane closures are common while evidence is documented and debris is removed. This process helps preserve information that may clarify what happened and assists in building an accurate understanding of the circumstances surrounding a fatal roadway collision.
