Madison County, FL (May 26, 2026) – One person died Monday evening after a sedan struck the rear of a semi-truck on Interstate 10 westbound near mile marker 262 in Madison County. Florida Highway Patrol said the sedan moved onto the median shortly before 5:10 p.m. and then returned to the westbound lanes, where the front of the car hit the trailer.
The sedan became lodged beneath the trailer, and both vehicles came to a stop on the north shoulder of the interstate. A passenger in the car lost their life on the roadway, while the driver was taken to Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare with critical harm.
The semi-truck driver was not hurt, and westbound traffic along I-10 was temporarily shut down following the collision. Names of the people involved had not been released as of Tuesday.
Investigators are still working to determine what led the sedan to leave the roadway before returning to traffic. We extend heartfelt sympathies to the family mourning the passenger’s death.
Why Highway Crashes Involving Semi-Trucks Can Be Severe
Highway wrecks involving large commercial trucks often lead to serious consequences due to the size and weight differences between passenger cars and tractor-trailers. Smaller vehicles can slide beneath a trailer during sudden braking or lane changes, especially at interstate speeds. These situations are commonly referred to as underride situations.
Road conditions, visibility, traffic flow, and driver reaction times are usually reviewed after such roadway incidents. Safety features such as reflective tape, rear guards, and proper trailer lighting are designed to help drivers see large trucks sooner during evening travel or heavy traffic. Interstate routes with high truck volume may also experience temporary lane closures after major roadway disruptions, since large vehicles can block multiple lanes and require specialized towing equipment before traffic fully resumes.
