Brunswick, ME (May 26, 2026) – Three people were hospitalized following a rollover along Route 1 near Ormsby Way in Brunswick early Sunday morning, May 24. Police said the single-vehicle crash happened around 3:20 a.m. when a southbound car traveled off the left side of the roadway, struck a cable barrier, and overturned.
According to investigators, neither the driver nor a rear-seat passenger was wearing a seat belt, and both were thrown from the vehicle. All three people inside the car were believed to have been seriously hurt and were taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment.
A preliminary review indicated alcohol may have been a factor in the rollover. Traffic along Route 1 was reduced to one lane for several hours while emergency units worked in the roadway and crews cleared debris.
The people involved had not been publicly identified as of Tuesday, May 26. Investigators are still working to determine all factors that led to the rollover. We hope those injured make a full and steady recovery.
Why Seat Belt Use Matters in Rollover Crashes
Rollover crashes often lead to severe harm because occupants can be tossed around inside the vehicle or ejected during the overturn sequence. Seat belts help reduce that risk by keeping people secured in their seats while the vehicle moves unpredictably. Safety experts have long found that people who are not restrained face a much greater chance of serious trauma in these types of wrecks.
Road conditions, speed, alcohol use, and sudden steering movements can all contribute to a vehicle leaving the roadway and rolling over. Larger vehicles with a higher center of gravity may also be more vulnerable during abrupt maneuvers. After a serious rollover, investigators commonly examine tire marks, guardrail damage, and vehicle movement to understand better how the sequence unfolded.
