Tampa, FL (May 31, 2026) – According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a chain-reaction wreck involving four vehicles claimed the life of one person on Friday night, May 29, on Interstate 275 in Tampa after a driver entered the highway traveling the wrong direction.
The incident began when a 21-year-old Tampa man driving a Chevy Silverado fled a separate hit-and-run investigation on Fowler Avenue. Troopers said the driver entered Interstate 275 and traveled southbound in the northbound lanes.
Near Busch Boulevard, the Silverado collided nearly head-on with a Toyota Corolla driven by a 24-year-old Tampa man. Both vehicles overturned following the collision, and the Silverado caught fire. While the Corolla was flipping over, it struck a Toyota Camry driven by a 26-year-old Wesley Chapel man. That contact caused the Camry to spin and hit a second Toyota Camry.
The Corolla driver died at the scene. The Silverado driver was hospitalized with serious injuries. Troopers said the drivers of both Camrys were not hurt. No names had been publicly released as of this report. Investigation into the accident is ongoing. We extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the man who died.
Why Wrong-Way Highway Crashes Are Often So Severe
Wrong-way crashes on interstate highways frequently result in catastrophic damage because vehicles are usually traveling at high speeds in opposite directions. Drivers often have very little time to react before a head-on collision occurs, especially at night when visibility is reduced. Even a brief moment of confusion or delayed braking can lead to devastating results.
These crashes can also trigger secondary collisions involving nearby vehicles. When one vehicle overturns or spins across multiple lanes, surrounding drivers may be unable to avoid contact. Fires are another major risk after high-speed highway collisions, particularly when fuel systems or engine compartments are damaged.
Traffic closures following these crashes can last for hours due to vehicle recovery, roadway cleanup, and detailed reconstruction work conducted along the interstate.
