The Michigan State Police said the crash happened around 8:00 p.m. on I-196, west of Lake Michigan Drive. Investigators said a 23-year-old man was traveling east in an SUV when the vehicle crossed the median and entered the westbound lanes.
The SUV then collided head-on with a westbound vehicle. A passenger in the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two other people in the SUV were taken to a hospital with critical injuries. A fourth person in the SUV had injuries that were not considered life-threatening and was listed as stable.
A 47-year-old woman riding in the front seat of the westbound vehicle was also taken to the hospital with critical injuries. A 7-year-old passenger in the back seat was brought to a hospital as a precaution and was stable, while the 49-year-old driver was not hurt.
Westbound I-196 was closed at Lake Michigan Drive after the crash. The Michigan State Police are continuing to investigate what caused the SUV to cross the median.
Our condolences go to the person’s family and loved ones, and we hope everyone injured makes a full recovery.
Wrong-Side Freeway Crashes Create Life-Threatening Risks
Median-crossing crashes can be extremely dangerous because vehicles may enter traffic moving in the opposite direction. On a freeway, this can lead to a head-on collision at higher speeds and leave several people seriously hurt.
Crashes involving multiple passengers may create different injury levels within the same vehicle. Some people may suffer critical trauma, while others are evaluated for possible injuries that are not immediately clear.
Freeway closures after a fatal crash give investigators room to review the roadway safely. Officials frequently examine vehicle paths, median design, speed, lane position, damage patterns, and where each vehicle came to rest to understand how the collision happened.
