Naperville, IL (July 6, 2026) – A driver died after a chain-reaction crash on westbound I-88 near Winfield Rd in Naperville, Illinois, late on Sunday night, July 5.

Emergency units responded to the crash just before 11 p.m. A vehicle rear-ended another car that had slowed due to a prior collision in the same stretch of road. The driver of the car that was struck from behind was pronounced dead at the scene.

The roadway was shut down following the accident and reopened around 3:30 a.m. The identity of the person killed was not immediately released, and no further details about the other drivers involved in the wreck were made public in the initial report on the collision.

What led to the first crash remains unclear at this time. Both crashes are still under investigation, and more information will be released as it becomes available.

Our condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the driver who lost their life.

What to Know About Chain-Reaction Crashes on Illinois Interstates

Chain-reaction crashes, where a second collision occurs because of slowed or stopped traffic from a first, are among the most preventable yet most deadly types of freeway accidents. When a vehicle slows unexpectedly on a high-speed interstate, drivers approaching from behind may not have enough time or distance to stop safely, particularly at night when visibility is limited and reaction times may be slower. The second crash usually carries more force than the first, since the approaching driver may not brake until the last moment.

Illinois law requires drivers to slow down and move over when approaching crash scenes or emergency vehicles on the roadway. On interstates like I-88, which carries significant traffic through the western suburbs of Chicago, the risk of secondary crashes is heightened by the volume and speed of vehicles traveling through the corridor at any hour.

Overnight closures following fatal crashes on Illinois interstates typically remain in place until investigators have documented the scene, removed all vehicles, and cleared any debris from the road: a process that can take several hours when multiple vehicles and a fatality are involved.
