Orange County, FL (June 5, 2026) – A chain-reaction crash on East Colonial Dr near Crescent Blvd and Alafaya Trail left one person dead and two others injured on Thursday afternoon.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, three vehicles were traveling westbound in the inside lane when traffic ahead caused a 2001 Ford F-150 to stop. A 2019 Genesis slowed behind it, followed by a 2015 Toyota Prius.
Investigators said the Prius failed to stop in time and struck the rear of the Genesis, which was then pushed into the back of the Ford F-150.
The driver and passenger in the Genesis were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the F-150 remained at the crash site and was not injured.
Authorities confirmed the driver of the Toyota Prius died as a result of the crash. Additional details, including identity information, were not immediately released.
The circumstances surrounding the collision remain under review as investigators work to determine contributing factors. We extend our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased and wish a full recovery to those injured.
Why Rear-End Chain-Reaction Crashes Often Escalate Quickly
Multi-vehicle rear-end collisions often occur when traffic slows suddenly, and following drivers do not have enough distance or reaction time to stop safely. Once the first impact occurs, momentum can push vehicles into further collisions.
These types of crashes are more common in congested corridors where multiple lanes of traffic are moving at similar speeds. Even small differences in braking distance can lead to a chain reaction involving several vehicles.
Investigators typically examine speed, following distance, driver attention, and roadway conditions when reconstructing these crashes. Understanding how each vehicle responded helps determine the sequence of impacts.
