Why Centerline-Crossing Collisions Have Severe Outcomes
Crashes involving a vehicle crossing into opposing traffic frequently result in significant injuries because the vehicles are often traveling toward one another at roadway speeds. The combined forces involved can make these collisions especially dangerous.
A vehicle may cross the centerline for a variety of reasons, including distraction, fatigue, medical emergencies, impairment, or attempts to avoid obstacles. To find the exact cause of the collision typically requires a detailed review of evidence from the roadway and vehicles involved.
Investigators often analyze vehicle damage, tire marks, roadway conditions, and witness statements when reconstructing these collisions. Understand the how and why a vehicle entered an opposing lane can help provide a clearer picture of the factors that contributed to the crash.
