What Can Cause a Vehicle to Leave the Roadway After a Two-Vehicle Collision?
When two vehicles collide, one or both may leave the roadway due to the force of the impact and the loss of driver control. This is more likely near intersections, where sudden braking or turning can happen within seconds. SUVs may also be more likely to roll or slide into ditches and embankments because of their higher center of gravity.
After a vehicle leaves the road, emergency crews often focus on safely removing anyone trapped inside while checking for fuel leaks or other hazards. Investigators may later examine skid marks, vehicle damage, roadway design, and traffic patterns to better determine how the crash unfolded. Weather, visibility, and vehicle speed are also common factors reviewed after this type of roadway collision.
