What Can Lead to Delays After a Serious Traffic Collision?
Traffic delays are common after major roadway crashes, especially when several vehicles are involved. Lanes may stay closed while damaged vehicles are removed and injured people receive treatment. Debris scattered across travel lanes can also slow reopening efforts.
Investigators often review vehicle positions, roadway markings, and witness accounts before traffic fully resumes. In some cases, nearby intersections may remain partially blocked while crews document damage and clear the roadway. Drivers in surrounding neighborhoods can also experience backups as traffic is redirected.
When people leave the roadway on foot after a collision, delays may increase while crews search nearby streets or parking areas. Even after lanes reopen, congestion can continue for some time due to earlier traffic buildup.
