What Information Is Gathered After a Hit-and-Run in Ohio?
After a fatal hit-and-run, investigators usually begin by reviewing physical evidence left behind near the roadway. This can include broken vehicle parts, tire marks, debris, and surveillance footage from nearby homes or businesses. Witness statements may also help piece together what happened before and after the person was struck.
Road lighting, weather, and visibility are often reviewed as part of the process. In some cases, damage found on a suspect vehicle can later match evidence collected from the roadway. Medical findings may also help explain how the person was struck and the force involved. Early reports in hit-and-run cases are often limited while investigators work to identify the vehicle and determine the sequence of events leading up to the fatal injuries.
