What Investigators Look for After Residential Structure Fires
After a residential fire, investigators often begin by identifying the area where flames first appeared. Burn patterns, heat damage, and smoke movement can help determine how the fire spread through the building.
Electrical systems, appliances, and heating sources are commonly reviewed as potential points of origin. Investigators may also assess whether accidental causes, such as cooking or wiring issues, played a role.
In multi-unit buildings like fourplexes, shared walls and ventilation systems can allow fire and smoke to travel quickly between units. Water damage from firefighting efforts is also documented as part of the overall assessment. Early findings are often updated as more evidence is collected from the scene.
