Why Nighttime Pedestrian Strikes Often Result in Serious Harm
Pedestrian-vehicle collisions during nighttime hours can lead to severe outcomes due to limited visibility and reduced reaction time for drivers. On rural highways such as KY 15, lighting conditions may vary and make it harder to see people on or near the roadway.
When a pedestrian is on a travel lane, drivers may have only seconds to notice and react. Speed and road curvature can further reduce the time available to avoid contact. Dark clothing can also make detection more difficult in low-light conditions.
Medical attention is often required quickly due to the force involved in these types of encounters. Investigators typically review roadway layout, lighting, driver statements, and other available evidence to better understand how the sequence of events developed.
