Arlington Twp., MI (July 17, 2026) – One person was critically injured following a collision involving a pickup truck and a semi-truck on Thursday morning, July 16, at the intersection of County Road 681 and 48th Avenue in Arlington Township.

According to the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the crash at approximately 11:48 a.m. A preliminary investigation indicates that a 2004 Toyota Tundra traveling eastbound on 48th Avenue entered the intersection and was struck by a northbound Freightliner semi-truck hauling an empty 40,000-pound tank.

The 75-year-old driver of the pickup became trapped inside the vehicle and was extricated by personnel from Van Buren EMS and the Bangor Fire Department. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was reported to be in critical condition. The 48-year-old driver of the semi-truck, who is from the Holland area, suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for evaluation. Authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.

We hope the critically injured man receives the care he needs and wish him the best possible recovery.

What Happens When a Passenger Vehicle and a Semi-Truck Collide?

Collisions between passenger vehicles and large commercial trucks at rural intersections usually result in significant damage because of the substantial difference in vehicle size and weight. Even when a tractor-trailer is hauling an empty trailer or tank, its overall mass can generate tremendous force during an impact.

Emergency responders may need specialized equipment and additional personnel when occupants become trapped inside damaged vehicles. Rescue efforts regularly focus on safely extricating victims while protecting them from further injury before they can be transported for medical treatment.

Investigators typically examine roadway evidence, vehicle damage, traffic control devices, witness statements, and electronic data from the vehicles involved. These findings help reconstruct the crash and determine the sequence of events while the investigation remains ongoing.
