Cedar Rapids, IA (June 2, 2026) – A passenger was taken to a hospital with minor injuries after a truck pulling a trailer rolled over on the southbound I-380 in Linn County on Monday evening, June 1. The crash happened around 7:40 p.m. between Center Point and Toddville.
A tire blowout caused the driver to lose control, sending the truck onto its side. The driver was not hurt; only the passenger required hospital care.
The rollover blocked the lone open lane on that stretch of I-380, which was already reduced to a single lane due to construction. Traffic came to a standstill behind the wreck before the road reopened shortly before 8:30 p.m.
Emergency units from multiple agencies were on scene.
No names were included in the initial report on the accident. The cause has been confirmed as a tire failure, though a full review of the collision is still underway. We hope the passenger who was hurt has a smooth recovery.
What to Know About Tire Blowout Rollovers on Iowa Interstates
A tire blowout on an interstate can cause a driver to lose control quickly, especially when towing a trailer. The added weight and length of a trailer amplify the instability that follows a sudden loss of tire pressure, making it harder to keep the vehicle in its lane. At highway speeds, this can result in a rollover before the driver has time to fully react.
Construction zones add another layer of risk in these situations. When lanes are already reduced, there is less room to recover from a sudden loss of control, and stopped or slowed traffic nearby increases the potential for secondary collisions. Drivers passing through active construction stretches are generally advised to reduce speed and increase their following distance.
Rollovers involving trucks and trailers can take longer to clear than standard crashes, since the vehicle must be righted before it can be towed and the roadway can reopen.
