Why Following Too Closely Can Lead to Rear-End Collisions?
Rear-end crashes are among the most common types of traffic collisions and occur when drivers do not leave enough distance between their vehicle and the one ahead. Safe following distances provide drivers with additional time to react when traffic slows unexpectedly or a vehicle comes to a sudden stop.
Reaction time plays an important role in preventing these incidents. Even a brief distraction or delayed response can reduce the distance available to avoid a collision. Weather, roadway conditions, and traffic volume can further affect stopping distances and vehicle control.
After a rear-end crash, investigators frequently review vehicle positions, damage patterns, driver statements, and roadway conditions. These factors help determine how the collision occurred and whether any traffic violations contributed to the incident.
