Augusta, GA (May 28, 2026) – A three-car crash with apparent injuries slowed traffic Thursday morning near Riverwatch Parkway and Interstate 20 in Augusta. The collision happened around 10 a.m. on the eastbound Interstate 20 entrance ramp from Riverwatch Parkway.
Traffic was reduced to one lane leading onto Riverwatch Parkway while emergency units worked in the roadway. At least one person was placed into an ambulance for treatment. No names or additional medical details were released following the crash.
The cause of the collision remains under review as crews continue gathering information. We extend our thoughts to those receiving care after the wreck.
Why Entrance Ramps Are Common Locations for Traffic Collisions
Entrance ramps can become dangerous when drivers attempt to merge into fast-moving highway traffic within a short distance. Vehicles entering an interstate often accelerate quickly while also watching surrounding traffic, which can increase the chance of sudden braking or lane changes.
Crashes involving several vehicles are more likely during busy travel periods when traffic volume is heavier near interchanges. Limited space, reduced visibility around curves, and driver distraction can also contribute to roadway collisions on ramps. Even minor traffic disruptions in these areas may create backups because vehicles have fewer opportunities to safely move around blocked lanes. Emergency crews frequently narrow traffic to a single lane during cleanup efforts to allow safe access for medical care and vehicle removal.
