Wilkinson County, GA (May 28, 2026) – Two tractor-trailers collided Thursday at the intersection of State Route 540 and State Route 18 in Wilkinson County, leaving two people hurt. According to Sheriff Richard Chatman, the trucks struck each other before hitting another driver who had been waiting at a stop sign to turn.
One of the semi-truck drivers was flown to Atrium Health Navicent for treatment. Another person was taken by ambulance to a hospital for medical care. Additional information about the people involved had not been released as of Thursday.
Multiple agencies are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the wreck. We hope those injured in the crash recover quickly.
Why Intersections Can Be Especially Dangerous for Large Trucks
Intersections can pose serious challenges for tractor-trailer drivers due to the size and weight of commercial vehicles. Large trucks need more time to slow down, stop, and complete turns safely. When two heavy vehicles enter an intersection at the same time, the impact force can cause widespread damage and put nearby drivers at risk.
Crashes involving semi-trucks may also affect vehicles that are stopped nearby or waiting to enter traffic. Debris, shifting cargo, and the movement of large trailers can extend beyond the initial point of contact. Investigators often review roadway visibility, traffic signals, vehicle speed, and braking distance after these types of highway collisions. Medical helicopters are sometimes used when injuries require rapid transport to specialized trauma centers.
