Why Chain-Reaction Crashes Tend to Happen During Morning Commutes
Multi-vehicle crashes, such as chain-reaction collisions, are more likely during busy commute hours when traffic is heavy, and vehicles are traveling in close proximity. A sudden stop or unexpected slowdown can quickly trigger a series of rear-end collisions.
Intersections and school travel routes often experience increased traffic density in the morning, which can reduce drivers’ reaction time. Even a brief delay in braking can cause a vehicle to strike another and trigger additional impacts behind it.
In crashes involving school transportation, investigators typically review vehicle spacing, driver attention, and roadway flow to understand how the sequence of impacts developed. Early reports usually focus on immediate injuries and traffic disruption, while more detailed findings are gathered later.
