Lawrence, MA (May 21, 2026) – One woman was injured Wednesday afternoon, May 20, after escaping a two-alarm fire on Marble Avenue in Lawrence.
The fire was reported at about 3:19 p.m. at 99 Marble Avenue after an outside fire extended to a structure. Heavy fire and smoke were reported from the rear second floor by 3:22 p.m., and a second alarm was called minutes later as crews worked in hot, windy weather.
Emergency units evaluated a woman who reportedly jumped from a window to get away from the flames. She was taken to Lawrence General Hospital at about 4:23 p.m. with an ankle injury and was later treated and released.
The main body of the fire was knocked down by about 4:04 p.m., and crews cleared the property around 5:55 p.m. The cause remains under review as investigators continue gathering information. We hope the injured woman continues to recover safely.
Why Escaping a Structure Fire Can Lead to Injuries
Escaping a structure fire can be dangerous because people may have only seconds to react. Smoke, heat, blocked exits, and confusion can make it hard to leave safely. Some people may use windows or upper floors to get out, which can lead to ankle, leg, back, or head injuries.
Hot and windy weather can also make fires harder to control. Wind may push flames into new parts of a building, while high heat can tire crews faster. After a fire, medical teams may check people for burns, smoke exposure, falls, and breathing problems. Even when a person is treated and released, soreness or swelling may appear later. Building damage, fire spread, and escape routes often help explain how people were harmed.
