Syracuse, NY (June 1, 2026) – A person was taken to the hospital after a fire damaged a three-unit apartment building on Syracuse’s West Side on Sunday morning, May 31.
A fire department spokesperson said crews were called around 6:33 a.m. to 227 Kellogg Street for a reported structure fire. When they arrived, smoke was coming from a first-floor window of the two-and-a-half-story building. They located the fire in the living room of a first-floor apartment while additional personnel searched the remaining units to ensure everyone was out safely.
The fire was brought under control in less than 10 minutes and fully extinguished shortly afterward. One person had already exited the building before crews arrived and was taken to Upstate University Hospital for evaluation. The condition of that person was not released.
No further details about the fire were immediately available. The cause remains under review. We extend our thoughts to the person affected by the fire.
What Happens During Apartment Fire Investigations in the Early Stages
When a fire affects a multi-unit building, early efforts often focus on identifying where the flames started and how they spread. Crews may document smoke patterns, burn marks, and ventilation points to understand movement inside the structure. Interviews with occupants and neighbors can also help establish a timeline of events leading up to the fire.
In buildings with multiple units, shared walls and open spaces can allow smoke to move quickly between rooms, even when flames are contained to a single area. Investigators also review heating systems, electrical wiring, and cooking areas as part of the process. During the initial phase, information may remain limited while safety assessments and documentation are completed.
