What Is Reviewed Following a Multi-Vehicle Highway Crash?
When several vehicles are involved in a highway collision, investigators typically begin by examining how traffic was moving before contact occurred. Vehicle positions, lane usage, speed, and driver actions are reviewed to determine the sequence of events. Physical evidence from the roadway can also help clarify how the vehicles interacted.
Commercial trucks present additional factors that may be considered during a crash investigation. Their larger size, weight, and stopping distances can influence how a collision develops. Investigators may review vehicle inspections, maintenance records, and any available electronic data to better understand vehicle movements.
Roadway and environmental conditions are also examined, even when weather is favorable. Traffic volume, visibility, signage, and roadway design can provide useful context. As more information is gathered, investigators can develop a clearer picture of the circumstances that contributed to the crash.
