Marion Twp., MN (June 17, 2026) – A 72-year-old woman was killed in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 90 in Marion Township on Tuesday morning, June 16.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the collision occurred at approximately 8:58 a.m. on eastbound I-90 just east of Highway 52 in Olmsted County. Investigators reported that a 2005 International semi tractor, a 2013 Nissan Altima, and a 2023 Toyota RAV4 were involved.
A preliminary investigation found that the semi and Nissan were traveling eastbound when the International sideswiped the Altima. The Nissan then collided with the westbound Toyota. Evelyn Marie Brye, 72, of Saint James, who was driving the Toyota, died as a result of the crash.
The drivers of the semi and Nissan, along with an 18-year-old passenger in the Nissan, were not reported injured. Troopers noted that road surfaces were wet at the time, and all occupants were wearing seat belts. Investigators continue to review the circumstances surrounding the crash. We extend our sincere condolences to Evelyn Brye’s family and friends.
How Wet Road Conditions Can Affect Highway Travel?F
Wet pavement can significantly reduce traction, making it more difficult for drivers to maintain control of their vehicles. Even light rainfall can create slippery conditions, especially when water mixes with oil and debris that have accumulated on the roadway. These factors can increase stopping distances and reduce tire grip.
High-speed highways present additional challenges during wet weather. Drivers may have less time to react to sudden traffic changes, lane shifts, or vehicles moving unexpectedly. Larger vehicles, including commercial trucks, also require greater distances to slow down or stop safely under these conditions.
Following a major highway collision, investigators examine roadway conditions, vehicle positions, witness accounts, and physical evidence from the roadway. Weather data and vehicle damage patterns may also provide insight into how the sequence of events developed. This information helps create a clearer understanding of the factors that contributed to the crash.
