Campbell, CA (August 5, 2026) – One person was killed in a fiery crash on State Route 17 South near the Hamilton Ave off-ramp in Campbell on Tuesday, August 4.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision was reported shortly before 2:50 a.m. on southbound SR-17 just north of the Hamilton Ave exit. Initial dispatch reports indicated that a black sedan had collided with a pickup truck, and the pickup had caught fire. Responding units reported flames engulfing the vehicle and an occupant possibly trapped inside. Firefighters and emergency personnel responded to the scene, but at least one person died as a result of the crash.

The collision prompted the closure of all southbound lanes of SR-17 for several hours while investigators documented the scene, and the Santa Clara County Coroner responded. Two vehicles were later impounded as evidence, and the California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the person who lost their life.

How Are Fatal Highway Crashes With Vehicles in Fire Investigated?

Fatal crashes involving vehicle fires require an extensive investigation because fire damage can destroy or alter important evidence. Investigators carefully document the crash scene before vehicles are removed, examining debris patterns, impact damage, burn areas, and roadway evidence to reconstruct the sequence of events.

When a vehicle catches fire after a collision, fire personnel work to extinguish the blaze before investigators and the coroner can safely access the scene. Specialized evidence tows are used to preserve the vehicles for further forensic examination.

Major investigations of this nature frequently result in extended highway closures while authorities collect evidence, inspect the vehicles, and determine the factors that contributed to the crash. The investigation may continue for days or weeks as additional evidence is analyzed.
