Hopewell, NY (August 20, 2026) – One passenger died, and several others were seriously injured on Wednesday afternoon when a medical transport bus collided with a dump truck at State Route 488 and Freshour Road, according to Ontario County Sheriff David Cirencione. The crash was reported around 1:49 p.m.

The bus, driven by a 75-year-old Phelps man carrying six adult passengers, was heading north on Freshour Road when it entered Route 488 and was struck by an eastbound dump truck, driven by a 31-year-old Canandaigua man, on its driver-side passenger area. One passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. Four others suffered serious injuries; three were flown by helicopter to Strong Memorial Hospital, and one was taken by ambulance. A sixth passenger and the bus driver had minor injuries and were taken to hospitals in Canandaigua and Clifton Springs. The dump truck driver was not hurt and stayed at the scene.

The sheriff said investigators are looking at whether speed, distraction, a medical issue, or impairment played a role, and noted the intersection has a history of crashes involving northbound traffic on Freshour Road. The roadway was closed for about five hours before reopening.

Our condolences go out to the victim’s family and loved ones.

Why Do Some Intersections Have Repeated Serious Crashes Over Time?

Certain intersections develop a pattern of crashes due to a combination of factors, including sightline obstructions, traffic volume, and how a stop-controlled road meets a higher-speed route. When one direction of travel has to cross or merge into faster-moving traffic without a signal, the margin for driver error narrows considerably.

Local officials and residents notice these patterns well before formal data confirms them, since repeated minor crashes at the same spot can signal an underlying design issue rather than isolated driver mistakes. This kind of pattern can prompt engineering reviews, including consideration of measures like reduced speed limits, added signage, or a roundabout.

Investigators reviewing a serious crash at a known problem intersection typically still examine the specific circumstances individually, including speed, visibility, and any driver impairment, rather than attributing the outcome solely to the intersection’s history. This kind of case-by-case review is part of why formal changes to an intersection can take time even after a pattern becomes evident to the community.
