Why Utility Pole Collisions Are Usually Severe
Crashes involving utility or light poles can result in devastating injuries because the impact is concentrated on a fixed object that does not absorb energy as well as a moving vehicle might. High speeds, impaired driving, fatigue, distraction, or adverse road conditions can all contribute to these types of collisions, though investigators have not indicated whether any of those factors played a role in this crash.
Investigators typically examine vehicle damage, tire marks, roadway conditions, and any available surveillance footage to reconstruct the events leading up to the collision. They may also inspect the vehicle for mechanical issues and, if appropriate, review toxicology results before determining the cause of the crash.
