How Can Pedestrians Stay Safer Near Turning Trucks?
Large trucks can create serious risks for pedestrians when making turns at busy intersections. Their size can limit the driver’s view of people near the front, side, or rear of the vehicle. Pedestrians should not assume a truck driver can see them just because they are nearby.
People walking near intersections should watch for turning vehicles and remain on designated sidewalks or crossings when available. Waiting until a truck has completed its turn can provide additional safety.
Drivers of large vehicles should check mirrors and blind spots before and during turns. Slowing down can also give drivers more time to recognize pedestrians who may enter a vehicle’s path.
Clear communication between pedestrians and drivers can help reduce the risk of serious roadway injuries.
