Victoria, TX (August 14, 2026) – One person died, and two others suffered serious injuries on Tuesday night after three vehicles were involved in a collision in the 3800 block of Sam Houston Drive.
Police said 22-year-old Xavier Cantu was driving a truck that struck an SUV operated by 26-year-old Terrence Cubit. The SUV also carried 44-year-old Laquanda Callis and a 12-year-old girl before it hit a utility pole near Lilac Lane.
Cubit died from injuries sustained in the collision. Callis and the girl were taken to an out-of-town hospital with serious injuries.
After the first collision, Cantu’s truck veered into oncoming traffic and hit another truck driven by 72-year-old Gary Bennett. Information about whether Bennett was hurt was not provided.
Cantu was arrested after his truck stopped in a private driveway. He faces one count of intoxication manslaughter with a vehicle and two counts of intoxication assault with a vehicle. The investigation remains underway. Our condolences go to Cubit’s loved ones, and we hope those seriously hurt recover fully.
