Mentor, OH (May 26, 2026) – One person was seriously injured following a two-vehicle collision on Monday morning on the Reynolds Road bridge over State Route 2 in Mentor. The crash was reported at 9:56 a.m. on May 25, according to a traffic crash report filed by police.
Investigators said a northbound vehicle on Reynolds Road (State Route 306) failed to remain in its proper lane and struck a southbound vehicle head-on at the front center of both cars. Both vehicles sustained disabling damage as a result of the impact.
Officers arrived shortly after the call and confirmed that the southbound lanes over the bridge were closed for about 90 minutes while the roadway was cleared. A serious injury was suspected in the collision, though further medical details were not released.
The southbound lanes have since reopened. Authorities continue reviewing how the lane departure occurred. We are thinking of the person hurt and hope for a strong recovery.
Why Lane Departure Crashes on Bridges Can Be Severe
Bridges often have limited shoulder space and narrow lanes, which can increase the risk of serious outcomes when a vehicle drifts out of its lane. Unlike wider roadways, there is often little room for correction if a driver crosses the center line, especially when traffic is approaching from the opposite direction.
Even a brief lapse in attention can lead to a direct head-on impact in these settings. Factors such as weather, visibility, fatigue, or distraction may contribute, but each crash requires careful review of physical evidence and vehicle positions. After incidents on bridge structures, investigators typically examine lane markings, roadway design, and speed conditions to better understand how the collision developed.
