Frequently Asked Questions
Are pedestrian and scooter crashes more common at night?
Low light and reduced visibility do raise risk, but many crashes, including this one, happen in broad daylight when drivers fail to see a pedestrian or rider in a crosswalk.
What should someone do after being hit while walking or riding a scooter?
Call 911, stay at the scene if possible, seek medical evaluation even for injuries that seem minor, and get the names of witnesses and the other party involved.
Who has the right of way at a crosswalk?
Pedestrians and scooter riders generally have the right of way once they have legally entered a marked or unmarked crosswalk, though drivers and crossers both carry a duty to watch for each other.
What can drivers do to avoid hitting someone in a crosswalk?
Slowing down near intersections and off-ramps, scanning crosswalks before turning, and avoiding distractions give drivers more time to spot pedestrians and scooter riders.
