REDFORD TOWNSHIP, Wayne County, Mich., Nov. 4, 2026 — One person died, and several others were hurt in a multi-vehicle crash on eastbound I-96 on Tuesday afternoon, November 3. The crash happened near the Telegraph Road exit, close to Beech Daly.
Redford Township police said a Ford Focus was traveling at a high speed on eastbound I-96 as it approached the Telegraph exit. The Focus struck the rear of a pickup truck that was moving slowly in the exit lane because of traffic backed up on the ramp. The impact spun the pickup into an SUV, and the Ford Focus then caught fire.
The driver of the Ford Focus was taken to a hospital, where they later died. The other people involved in the crash were injured but are expected to recover.
Officials said speed was a factor in the crash. Whether drugs or alcohol played a role has not been determined and remains under investigation. Multiple police departments responded to assist at the scene.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can drivers avoid getting caught in a highway pile-up?
Keep a steady speed that matches surrounding traffic, watch for brake lights well ahead, and slow down early when you see backups forming near an exit or ramp.
What should I do if I come up on a crash scene on the highway?
Slow down well before reaching the scene, turn on hazard lights if traffic is stopped, and move into a lane away from emergency vehicles and people on foot when possible.
Why does following distance matter so much in highway crashes?
A larger gap between your vehicle and the one ahead gives you more time to react if traffic suddenly slows, which is usually what triggers a chain-reaction crash like this one.
