Why Wrong-Way Bicycle Crashes Can Be Especially Dangerous
Bicycle crashes involving wrong-way travel pose serious risks to both riders and drivers, especially during overnight hours. Drivers generally expect bicycles and vehicles to move in the same direction as traffic, which can reduce reaction time for those traveling against the flow.
Visibility is also a major factor in nighttime bicycle accidents. Dark roadways, limited lighting, and reduced sight distance may make it harder for drivers to spot cyclists in time to avoid a collision. Reflective gear and bicycle lights can sometimes improve visibility, but roadway conditions still play a major role.
Investigators often examine lane position, lighting conditions, vehicle speed, and road markings after these crashes. Physical evidence from the roadway and damage to the vehicle or bicycle may help explain how the collision occurred.
