Oregon, MO (January 5, 2026) – A two-vehicle collision on Sunday afternoon left one man injured along Highway 19, approximately two miles north of Alton. The crash occurred at around 4:20 p.m. and involved a Dodge SUV and a commercial truck traveling in opposite directions.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the incident unfolded when a northbound 2023 Dodge Durango attempted to make a left turn and was struck by a southbound 1997 Ford LN7000. The impact caused extensive damage to the Durango, which was towed from the scene by Foulk’s Towing at the request of Oregon County officials. The Ford truck sustained only minor damage and was driven away.
The 32-year-old male driver of the Dodge, a resident of Thayer, MO, suffered injuries and was transported by ambulance to Ozarks Health Care in West Plains for medical treatment. The driver of the Ford, a 45-year-old man from Alton, was not injured in the crash.
Troopers J.Q. Hummel and A.K. Hughston responded to the scene and are overseeing the investigation. Officials have not released further information regarding contributing factors, but confirmed the crash stemmed from a turning movement gone wrong.
We extend our well-wishes to the injured driver and hope for his swift recovery.
Left-Turn Crashes in Missouri
This weekend’s crash north of Alton highlights one of the more common and dangerous situations on Missouri’s roadways: turning across oncoming traffic. When drivers attempt to make left turns on rural highways such as MO-19, misjudging the speed or distance of an approaching vehicle can result in serious collisions, especially with larger commercial trucks involved.
In this case, the driver of the Dodge Durango was turning left when struck by an oncoming Ford truck. Despite using safety restraints, the driver sustained injuries serious enough to require ambulance transport to a nearby medical facility. While the injuries were reported as minor, the involvement of a heavy vehicle like a Ford LN7000 raises concerns about the potential for much more severe outcomes.
Left-turn crashes are especially prevalent on two-lane rural highways where passing zones, speed limits, and line-of-sight visibility can all play a role. Drivers unfamiliar with traffic patterns or approaching traffic may not have adequate warning before beginning a turn. Unfortunately, even when both drivers act within legal limits, the margin for error is often narrow.
For residents in Oregon County and throughout southern Missouri, awareness of rural driving risks and cautious turning practices can help reduce these types of incidents. When crashes occur, especially those involving injury and vehicle damage, it is essential to follow up with medical evaluations, insurance processes, and, if needed, legal resources to support recovery.
