Frequently Asked Questions
Are intersections a common site for motorcycle crashes?
Yes. Many motorcycle crashes happen at or near intersections, usually when a turning vehicle fails to see an oncoming rider or misjudges its speed and distance.
Does the road surface matter for motorcycle safety?
It does. Loose gravel, potholes, wet pavement and uneven lane markings give a motorcycle far less margin than a car, since riders depend on tire grip to stay upright.
What gear actually helps reduce injuries in a crash?
A DOT-approved helmet, a riding jacket and pants with abrasion-resistant material, gloves and over-the-ankle boots all reduce the severity of injuries in a fall or collision.
What usually causes motorcycle crashes like this one?
Common factors include a driver turning across a rider's path, failing to yield at an intersection, speed, and limited visibility of a smaller vehicle in traffic.
