East Windsor, NJ (June 17, 2026) – A child died early on Tuesday morning, June 16, after a three-vehicle accident on the New Jersey Turnpike southbound in East Windsor Township.
The collision happened around 1:29 a.m. A Freightliner tractor-trailer struck the back of a Subaru before continuing forward and hitting the rear of a Volvo box truck, according to the report.
After the second impact, the Freightliner traveled off the road to the left and hit a guardrail. The child, who was seated in the back of the Subaru, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The child’s name was not released in the initial report. The Freightliner driver and the Subaru driver had moderate injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital.
Investigators are still working to determine the full sequence of the fatal wreck. Our deepest condolences go to the child’s family and loved ones after this heartbreaking loss, and we wish those injured a swift and full recovery.
What Drivers Should Know About Late-Night Turnpike Accidents
Overnight turnpike travel can carry serious risks because vehicles often move at highway speeds while visibility is reduced. Drivers may have fewer visual cues, and traffic may appear lighter than it is.
Large trucks need more room to slow down than smaller vehicles. When several vehicles are traveling close together, a sudden stop or lane change can create a chain reaction. The weight and height of commercial trucks can also affect how force is transferred to smaller passenger vehicles.
Darkness, fatigue, glare, and changing traffic flow may all shorten reaction time. In multi-vehicle highway collisions, medical teams often check for head trauma, chest injuries, internal harm, and shock. Child passengers may need especially careful evaluation because injuries can be harder to detect right away.
