OXNARD, Ventura County, Calif., Nov. 6, 2026 — A 16-year-old girl died on Thursday morning, November 5, after being struck by an SUV at the intersection of Rose Avenue and Gonzales Road in Oxnard, according to the Oxnard Police Department.
Officers responded to the crossing shortly before 8:15 a.m. and found the teen lying in the roadway near the middle of the intersection. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said she suffered significant injuries in the collision.
Nearby roads were closed for a time while investigators worked the scene. The SUV's driver, a 31-year-old Oxnard woman, had pulled onto the right shoulder when officers arrived and cooperated with the investigation, according to a police news release.
Investigators said their preliminary findings indicate the girl was walking south in a crosswalk on the west side of Rose Avenue against a red light. The SUV was traveling eastbound on Gonzales Road and entered the intersection on a green light before striking her in the crosswalk. The driver was evaluated for signs of impairment, which officials said are not suspected, and investigators said speed does not appear to have been a factor. The investigation remains open.
Anyone with information has been asked to contact the Oxnard Police Department.
Our sympathies are with the family of the person who lost their life.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does a vehicle's speed affect a pedestrian's chances of survival?
Even modest increases in speed sharply reduce a pedestrian's odds of surviving a crash. Slower speeds give drivers more time to stop and reduce the force of impact if a collision happens.
Where do most pedestrian crashes happen?
A large share occur at or near intersections and crosswalks, usually when a pedestrian or driver misjudges the signal or right of way, as investigators say may have happened in this case.
Are pedestrian crashes more common after dark?
Reduced visibility at night and in early morning low-light conditions raises the risk, though crashes like this one, which happened in daylight hours, show they can occur anytime.
What should a pedestrian do immediately after being hit by a vehicle?
If possible, stay still and call 911, let dispatchers know the location and injuries, and wait for police and paramedics to arrive before moving unless remaining in place poses further danger.
