Frequently Asked Questions
Where do most pedestrian crashes happen?
A large share occur at or near intersections and along busier roadways, though many also happen mid-block in areas without marked crosswalks.
Are pedestrians at greater risk at night?
Yes. Reduced visibility makes it harder for drivers to see people on foot, and a large number of fatal pedestrian crashes happen after dark.
What should a pedestrian do immediately after being hit by a car?
If possible, try to stay where it's safe, call 911, and wait for police and medical help to arrive. Avoid moving unless staying in place creates further danger.
Who has the right of way at a crosswalk?
Pedestrians generally have the right of way in marked and unmarked crosswalks, but drivers and walkers both need to watch for each other, since right of way doesn't prevent a crash.
