Frequently Asked Questions
What usually causes pedestrian accidents?
Pedestrian crashes commonly happen when a driver fails to yield at a crosswalk or intersection, when visibility is poor, or when a pedestrian crosses outside a marked crossing. Investigators typically look at all of these factors before determining a cause.
Does vehicle speed change the outcome for a pedestrian who's hit?
Yes. Lower speeds give drivers more time to stop and reduce the force of impact, which generally lowers the chance of severe or fatal injury compared to crashes at higher speeds.
Where do most pedestrian accidents happen?
Many occur at or near intersections, where vehicle and pedestrian paths cross, though crashes also happen midblock when pedestrians cross outside designated areas.
Are pedestrian crashes more common after dark?
Nighttime and low-light conditions make pedestrians harder to see, so a meaningful share of fatal pedestrian crashes happen after sunset or before sunrise.
