Frequently Asked Questions

Does road surface condition affect motorcycle safety?

Yes. Loose gravel, potholes, wet pavement and uneven lane markings can cause a rider to lose control more easily than they would affect a car or truck, since motorcycles have less contact with the road.

What gear helps reduce injury for motorcyclists?

A properly fitted helmet, a reinforced jacket and pants, gloves and over-the-ankle boots all help reduce the severity of injuries in a crash. Helmets in particular lower the risk of serious head injury.

What usually causes motorcycle accidents?

Common factors include drivers failing to see motorcycles at intersections, following too closely, sudden lane changes and riders or drivers misjudging speed or distance.

Why do motorcycle crashes tend to cause more serious injuries?

Riders have no outer frame or airbags to absorb impact, so even a lower speed collision can result in broken bones or more serious trauma compared to crashes involving two passenger vehicles.
