What Typically Happens After a Fatal Hit-and-Run on a Texas Freeway?
Hit-and-run crashes on freeways present particular challenges for investigators because vehicles travel at high speeds and witnesses may have limited time to observe details. Surveillance cameras positioned along major urban freeways, however, often capture footage that can help identify a fleeing vehicle. Paint transfer, debris, and tire marks left at the scene may also provide physical clues about the type of car involved.
In Texas, leaving the scene of a crash that results in death is a felony offense carrying serious criminal penalties. When a fatality is involved, law enforcement typically assigns dedicated detectives to pursue the case until the driver is identified. Public tips have historically been one of the most effective tools in resolving hit-and-run cases where camera footage alone is not enough to make a positive identification.
