Cranston, RI (August 11, 2026) – A passenger suffered serious, life-threatening injuries early Sunday, August 9, after an ATV crash on Wellington Avenue in Cranston, Providence County. The crash was reported at approximately 12:07 a.m. just north of the Route 10 overpass.
According to the Cranston Police Department, a 2014 Honda TRX 450R ATV was traveling north on Wellington Avenue with a 28-year-old Providence man operating the vehicle and a 26-year-old Cranston woman riding as a passenger.
Police said the ATV entered a section of Wellington Avenue that was closed to vehicular traffic because of ongoing bridge construction connected to Route 10. The ATV later traveled back toward the road closure and struck a road-closed sign, several traffic barrels, and other roadway markers placed across the southbound lane.
The impact threw both occupants from the ATV. The passenger suffered serious head injuries, including severe head trauma and a brain bleed. She was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where she remains hospitalized in critical condition.
The operator also was taken to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment of minor injuries and was later released.
Investigators are examining the road-closure area, lighting, barriers, signage, and the ATV itself. The Cranston Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation photographed the scene and collected evidence. Police are also seeking surveillance footage from a portable construction-site camera near the crash.
Police said there is currently no indication that alcohol or impairment contributed to the crash. The investigation remains active, and charges are anticipated following its completion and consultation with the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office, as appropriate.
Why Can ATV Crashes Result in Severe Head Injuries?
ATV riders and passengers can be particularly vulnerable during a crash because they are exposed to the surrounding roadway and can be thrown from the vehicle during an impact. Head injuries can be especially serious when occupants are not wearing helmets.
Investigators examining an ATV crash may review the condition of the vehicle, roadway barriers, lighting, signage, and other environmental factors. Surveillance footage and physical evidence can also help establish how the vehicle was traveling and what happened immediately before the crash.
